Texas Transportation Museum

11731 Wetmore Road, San Antonio TX 78247

If your club or organization needs a speaker, Texas Transportation Museum has the answer. We have a number of volunteers who can speak on a range of topics, such as local transportation history, dating back to the age of stage coach travel in the 1850s, the arrival and development of railroads from the 1870s through the present, streetcar service from the 1870s to the early 1930s, the bicycle craze from around 1895 to 1905, through the arrival of horseless carriages in 1905 and the following development of our modern road system.

The museum itself is fascinating topic. The Texas Transportation Museum was founded in 1964 and has actually outlasted all the railroads running at that time, the Missouri Pacific, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas and the Southern Pacific. It remains an all volunteer organization. It is experiencing significant growth in attendance and is developing new attractions to see this growth continue.

Included in our roster of seasoned speakers is museum curator, Jared Davis. Jared has been curator for over twelve years and is a significant architect of the museum's revival and ongoing success. He began his career working on the railroads in Georgia in the late 1950s and has held a variety of fascinating positions since then, including a long stint treading the boards as an actor in New York city.

Another person well versed in talking to local groups is museum manager, Hugh Hemphill. Hugh is the author of "The Railroads of San Antonio and South Central Texas," published by Maverick Publishing in 2006. He is currently working on a second book, which will focus on the history of road travel, from large wheeled Mexican carts to the interstates and freeways of today. He has also been highly involved in the museum's renaissance.

There is no set fee for one of the museum's speakers, though a donation to TTM is always appreciated. For more information or to request a speaker for a specific date, please click: click on "TTM Speaker" below:
