SAMRA. San Antonio Model Railroad Association / Bob Clarke Rail Heritage Museum
7702 narrow pass, Live oak, TX 78233.
San Antonio's other premier model train club. SAMRA is the oldest model railroad club in south
Texas (est. ca. 1942). It has promoted public interest in model railroading and its associated
skills throughout Texas. While our focus is on the rail heritage of the San Antonio area, we
include members with interests ranging from high-density Eastern railroading to
turn-of-the-century narrow-gauge mining and logging railroads. All modeling scales are
well-represented, including "N", "HO", "O" (scale and tinplate), and narrow gauge railroads.
Many members have home layouts. Several of our members are nationally known NMRA "Master Model
Railroaders."

Sunset Station
1174 E. Commerce, (210) 222-9481. Opens 12:00, but not open on Sundays
The former Southern Pacific "Sunset" depot, named for the famous SP rail route between Los Angeles and new
Orleans, has been lovingly brought back to it's former glory by a private consortium. Though it is no longer a working rail depot, a
well preserved steam locomotive, #794, is just outside, along with the still in use railroad tracks, and the brand new AMTRAK depot is
right next door. Restoring this 'Building of a 1,000
lights' has cost millions and included a restoration to their former grandeur of the two enormous Southern Pacific stained glass windows.
The depot is the focus of what is known as the St Paul Square historic district, and you can get a very nice walking tour map of the area,
which is located very close to Rivercenter mall, the river walk and the Alamo. Stop in, check out the glorious buildings, and have a
refreshing beverage, a snack or a meal. The venue is multi-purpose and can be rented for parties, weddings and other functions.

The Texas Highway Patrol Museum
Located at 812 S. Alamo, TX 78205, (210) 231-6030, this museum tells the valorous story of the Texas Highway patrol since it's creation in 1932. Particularly poignant
are the pictures of the 76 (as of July 2002) troopers who have dies in the line of duty. It tells about the development of their
equipment and of some of the most famous incidents.
Probably the most famous of all were Bonnie and Clyde, in 1934. The outlaws were responsible for killing two troopers. In 1935, the Texas Highway Patrol became of the nation's first
state wide law enforcement agencies, under the Department of Public Safety.

San Antonio Model & Hobbyist Train Shows and Stores
Both TTM's own A.M.R.E. division and S.A.M.R.A. hold train shows every year at the Live Oak Civic center.
A.M.R.E. hold theirs in the fall and S.A.M.R.A. in the spring. Both shows bring into town vendors of
railroad related "stuff" of every conceivable kind. These shows are
particularly useful for folks who model in less available scales, such as the huge "G" or the miniscule "Z." In addition there are books,
videos, maps, T-shirts and memorabilia of every kind.
