Come ride the rails of Texas!
School & Organized Group Visits

Education is the main purpose of the Museum. We are open every Thursday and Friday mainly
so organized school groups can visit the museum. Other groups, such as from day cares, or
churches, are very welcome, too. We do take groups at the weekend but it is very important to book
such groups in advance, to make sure we have enough docents available. The museum has a well
thought out tour for every type of group. They will be given a guided tour of the museum by
knowledgeable docents, who will provide age appropriate information as they show the museum
to group members. Its hard to calculate the educational value the children will get from their
visit. It'll be some of the most cost effective dollars you will ever spend on their education.
The cost is unbelievably small too, only $2.00 per child!
(To ensure we cover our costs, however, there is a $40.00 minimum per group.)
Teachers and chaperones do not have to pay for admission at all!.

Train rides are also included in the itinerary. For many youngsters, this will be their
very first train ride. Reading about railroads in books or on the internet cannot compare
with the real live experience of riding the rails or seeing a genuine traditional depot and
walking through old fashioned passenger cars that became sleepers at night as even what we
consider to be relatively short journeys today sometimes took days in days gone by.

There is a great deal to be gained from breaking away from the confines of the class room
and experiencing what you are learning about first hand. Travel by railroad is no longer
a regular experience for the majority of us and yet they were so instrumental in making this
country what it is today. Our docents will take the time to guide groups through our huge
facility and give your students an incomparable educational experience.

Not only did the railroads open up the western frontiers, and move countless millions of
people and tons of material, they created many characteristics of modern life we take for
granted now, like standardized time. They were also at the very beginnings of the
telecommunications era. Telegraph wires followed the railroads and made instant
communication across the continent a reality with very efficient telegram services.

Of course, we have other exhibits too, including our automobiles, fire trucks and horse carriages.
We have several operating model railroad layouts which provide children with a stimulating perspective
on the size and scope of what railroads still do for the country. One of the layouts is a large scale
outdoor operation which again gives your students an opportunity to be outside while still learning.

A Word About Safety

Everyone at Texas Transportation Museum wants your visit to be a pleasant one. But we also care
that it is a safe experience, too. Railroads, by their very nature, are both fascinating and
dangerous. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP A TRAIN QUICKLY. Even going at the slow speed we use at
the museum, even in an emergency, a train will travel many more feet than a car would at the
same speed. In addition, it is simply not possible for the engineer to see everything that is
happening "behind" the train.
PLEASE HELP US TO KEEP OUR VERY SUCCESSFUL ACCIDENT PREVENTION RECORD BY FOLLOWING THIS IMPORTANT
RULE :
KEEP OFF THE TRACKS AT ALL TIMES!
Keep an eye on your kids. Don't let them wander off on their own. Keep them away from the
tracks and from the roads. We try to keep our exhibits out where you can see them, but much
of it is both rare and easily damaged.
Please keep small hands away, so everything and everyone is safe.
